Song of the Wood (since 1975) is the home of rare "handcrafted" musical instruments and enchanting musical recordings you might never find in those large chain stores (not that there's anything wrong with that!).   I don't recall anyone ever describing us as "convenient" ... so we must have a different idea.  It's a quieter, slower, less commercial, more intimate approach to the senses.  Probably just an outgrowth of my life as an instrument maker.  You know ... I've tried to build 'em quickly ... but I just can't.  Perhaps that's why I still have all my fingers!  Maybe I'm making excuses or ... maybe it's "just an old man's story."

My name is Jerry Read Smith

and I have been designing and building Hammer Dulcimers for 30 years now!  I also design and build Bowed Psalteries.  I maintain a Showroom in beautiful Black Mountain, North Carolina and a musical instrument workshop just a few miles west of the Showroom (visits to the workshop can be arranged).

In addition to My Work we also offer Hammer Dulcimers from a select group of makers from around the country as well as Bowed Psalteries, 

Instructional Materials, Accessories, rare and magical Recordings and Musical Gifts.  We are a small, family business and take pride in the personal, "hometown"

way we associate with our valued customers.

Our goal is to use our 30 years of experience to help guide folks to the most intelligent, exciting and sensible choices that might suit their particular needs, musical "plans" and lifestyle. Our inventory is not exhaustive.  We listen, evaluate and compare products in our field of expertise and then make available a qualified selection of products that we stand behind unequivocally.
