2 1/2
Octave Hammer Dulcimer
(Beginner)
Many
people prefer
to begin with a 2 1/2 octave, since it's significantly
less expensive
than a three octave of comparable quality and construction. If you are
uncertain about how involved you might get with the Hammer Dulcimer, an
inexpensive 2 1/2 octave might be a good move. If your skill and
interest continue to grow, you can always move up at a later date.
Other people
like to keep a 2 1/2 octave on hand, even if they also have a larger dulcimer,
because they're smaller and more portable. If this is the case, a good quality 2
1/2 octave might "fill the bill."

Rick Thum "Meadowlark"
This is one of our best
values to get someone started with the Hammer Dulcimer. It has a
very nice sound and is well crafted. This 2 1/2 Octave
instrument comes with a Baltic Birch ply top. If you're looking for a
basic instrument to "get your feet wet" and see if there's a future for
you with the Hammer Dulcimer, this is a great way to start.
Approximate size is: bottom rail - 35", top rail - 17" and bottom to top
- 14 1/2". Weight is 10 - 11 lbs.
Meadowlark (Birch ply top) Price: $275.00

Rick
Thum "Wren"
The Wren is Rick's
"upgraded" version of the popular "Meadowlark" shown above. The
Wren features a solid Mahogany soundboard instead of a Baltic Birch ply
top. It has a slightly brighter, richer sound (or tone) with a tad
more volume. For those who prefer the beauty of hardwood and don't
mind the extra $ ... it's a good choice
Wren
(Solid Mahogany top) Price $385.00
Songbird 2 1/2 octave case Price $45.00

The MasterWorks 12/11
For a little more than the Thum, the Master Works probably offers the best
overall sound. The brightness and clarity of tone in such a small
instrument is amazing. This model is available with either a Baltic Birch
or a Mahogany top, once again, with the Mahogany being more expensive and
offering a touch more "sound." Approximate size is: bottom rail - 39", top
rail - 18" and bottom to top - 13". Weight is 10 to 11 lbs.
Master Works 12/11 (Birch top)
Price: $399.00
Master Works 12/11 (Mahogany top) Price:
$469.00

The Apprentice (or Prelude)
The
Apprentice package
is specifically designed for the newcomer to the Hammer Dulcimer. It comes
complete with a semi-hardshell case, tuning note guides, a short and a long
support leg. Most people say the black top makes the strings a
little easier to see. The Prelude is like the
Apprentice only with a natural (light cream colored) top. Both the Prelude
and the Apprentice have attractive soundhole rosettes. These models have
baltic birch tops, possess a clear, soft tone and hold tune very well. Dusty
Strings instruments seem to have a slightly more "brassy" sound than the
others, which some players find particularly good for Bluegrass or Oldtime
music. Approximate size is: bottom rail 38 1/2", top rail - 20" and bottom
to top - 15". Weight is 13 lbs.
Apprentice Package
Price: $495.00
Prelude Price: $465.00
